A broad coalition of companies, interest groups, environmentalists and grid operators has submitted a letter to the parties negotiating a new government. With the call that the new cabinet will focus heavily on the realization and implementation of climate policy in the coming years.
Perspective
The plea was presented under the auspices of the National Climate Platform, which was created by Minister Jetten of Climate and Energy, with the aim of accelerating climate policy.
Chairman Kees Vendrik: “The transition is no longer just a good plan and a lot of paper, like a few years ago, it is now practice. A lot of money is now involved.”
According to Vendrik, parties need perspective from politics. The letter calls for consistent and accurate leadership in the progress of the climate and energy transition in the Netherlands. In other words: execute, execute, execute.
Anticipate
The letter points out, among other things, the global playing field that is changing rapidly. Many countries, within and outside the European Union, currently offer great opportunities for companies to realize clean energy or industrial production without greenhouse gas emissions within their national borders. The new cabinet is asked to anticipate this in a timely and adequate manner with a robust investment policy so as not to run the risk of losing an important source of prosperity and employment and becoming even more dependent on other countries for our energy supply.
Make choices
In conclusion, the coalition calls for making clear choices, where implementation and realization power are crucial to provide perspective. Choices that keep energy bills affordable, strengthen the Netherlands' energy independence, guarantee investment security and security of supply, and at the same time realize the climate target for 2030 in conjunction with the raw materials transition and further improvement of nature and water quality and biodiversity.
The broad alliance of social parties, including NedZero, promises to come up with concrete proposals in the short term.
The letter can be read via the National Climate Forum website.
