The Danish Energy Agency has published the tender frameworks for a total of 6 GW. This concerns 6 offshore wind farms; the largest offshore wind tender in Danish history. Each GW of wind capacity can supply green energy to 1 million Danish or European households. What is new is that parties have the freedom to produce more than 6 GW of wind. This could increase the installed capacity to 10 GW or more.
Europe's green power house
33 years after Denmark commissioned the world's first offshore wind farm, the country is taking another big step. On April 21, the Danish Energy Agency published the tender for possibly 6 new offshore wind farms. The tendered wind farms are located in the areas: North Sea I, Kattegat, Kriegers Flak II and Hesselø.
The green energy produced will not only be used for Danish consumption, but also for export to neighboring countries and for the production of green hydrogen. The Danes see it as a step towards the title of 'Europe's green power house' by contributing to the green transition, our common European security and independence from Russian gas.
“It is projects of this size that can make a big, green difference for the climate and our safety. Not just for Denmark, but for the whole of Europe”
New
The offshore wind farms must supply at least 6 GW, but as a new element there will be freedom to produce as much offshore wind as possible in the contracted areas (with the exception of Hesselø, which has a maximum capacity of 1.2 GW). If the market takes advantage of this freedom, it could lead to the construction of 10 GW of offshore wind or more.
A number of requirements will be implemented to ensure greater sustainability and social responsibility in the projects.
In use
The minimum capacity of all offshore wind farms, totaling 6 GW, must be commissioned before the end of 2030.
A total of 2.7 GW of installed capacity is currently operational in Denmark.
