Optional subject 'Wind Turbine Maintenance' at more secondary vocational schools

Based on the ambition to contribute to solutions for the current and predicted shortages of technical personnel, NedZero established the MBO Wind Training Working Group in October 2023. Together with representatives from secondary vocational education (MBO) and the wind sector, the working group aims to set up a full-fledged MBO renewable energy course.

Milestone

A great milestone was recently achieved by expanding the collaboration: the MBO Colleges Airport, -Westpoort and -Hilversum of the ROC of Amsterdam - Flevoland will collaborate with the Nova College in Beverwijk. Based on this joint effort, the optional part 'Wind Turbine Maintenance' will be offered from February 9, 2024. In 10 weeks, 15 students receive lessons in hydraulics, mechanics, electrical engineering and obtain the Limited Access Onshore safety certificate from the Global Wind Organization (GWO) . All students who have chosen the elective part come from an existing MBO course, such as electrical engineering, mechatronics or mechanics.

Rene de Moor, aeronautical engineering teacher and project coordinator at the MBO College Airport, part of the ROC of Amsterdam - Flevoland: “Success is achieved through collaboration. We have expressed the intention that this is the starting point for a long-term collaboration between the ROC of Amsterdam - Flevoland and the Nova College and hopefully we can motivate other MBO institutions to also seek collaboration.”

Next steps

We are working towards a full-fledged secondary vocational education in renewable energy. This also makes the choice to opt directly for the energy sector easier. De Moor also plans to offer courses in the context of Lifelong Learning, so that lateral entrants and BBL students (4 days of work, 1 day of school) can also follow a training course.

The developments will directly contribute to the availability of sufficiently qualified technical professionals for the wind industry in the short, medium and long term.
